I improvised the pattern and design, starting with a basic Norwegian Star pattern chart and adding rows of other designs and motifs inspired by the mittens. I had soooo much fun watching this take shape over Christmas break when we were out at the lake! Nothing like putting your feet up and knitting fireside as the cold winds blow :)
The pom pom, for me, is kind of like the cherry on top of a sundae. Actually not at all….I hate those things….but it is the crowning touch of Canadian winter whimsey. I can totally pull that look off ;)
(Yes, my hair is actually frozen. Baby, it's cold outside!)
I once again used the matching Tanis Fiber Arts yarns, this time in Green label/aran weight. I may sew a fleece lining in here yet for extra warmth, but so far it is snowshoeing-on-frozen-lake-at-sunset approved :)

It's a great hat! You could also knit a lining like the mittens if you wanted to.
what a great set! just a word of warning: i sewed a fleece liner into a couple of my hats and it makes my head sweat, i think b/c the fleece doesn't wick away moisture. if you are in a really cold climate that could be dangerous.
my next hat will have a knit cashmere lining instead.
What do I have to do in return for you to make me the exact same set but minus the pom pom? Nothing like beating around the bush eh?!
I completely understand the love here. They're perfect. (how about a snowflake scarf?) I can't wait till I can knit like that! Have only been at it off and on over the last 4 or 5 years and tend to set things aside when I mess up and can't find my mistakes! I WILL get there, tho!

One good thing about living in a frozen land is you get to wear cute and cozy clothes
If we took your freezing and our hot and combined them we would have a temperature we could both live with !
But then you wouldn't need that fabulous hat ...and it really is gorgeous!
These are beautiful! Makes me want to give it another try
Very nice! I do hope you don't have to fling snow with your head though ;o)
Sooo pretty :) I love the idea of having a matching, your such a smart lady!
Good for winters I need one.
