Exciting you are planning on doing zig-zags. This is my first time, and it took a row or so to get used to getting them right, but after a few rows they were going consistently well. The great thing about them is that any little inaccuracies get swallowed up in the whole look of the quilt and you really don't see them. I would definitely recommend zig-zags. I didn't follow the pattern exactly, I just cut 5" squares then the triangles from them - and it's worked just fine.
