I would like to do a post, but we switched from a PC to a Mac and I want to shoot myself in the face. I am so bloody frustrated! I thought Macs were supposed to be "intuitive'?? My instincts are telling me to kick it.
I can't figure out how to add photos. First up, when I upload photos from my camera into iPhoto they are a jumbled, disorganized mess, not listed alphabetically or by timeline....WTF? Also, my previously nicely organized photos were all mixed up as well when we transferred them over. Second, when I finally find them, I can't figure out how to compress them. Third, I tried to upload them instead via Flickr to deal with the compression issue, but half of the photos I sent to Flickr never showed up, but iPhoto says they are already there so they won't do it again. Then, I can't get Blogger to let me upload the Flick photos.
Am moments away from a toddler style tantrum. And I paid money for this??
I am going to pour myself some wine and get the heck out of this computer room before I break something. My Juki sewing machine finally arrived a couple weeks ago so I am going to try and figure that out....hope it is less frustrating than this.
Grrr.....
Ha ha ha. I had the same experience when we got a Mac last fall. I was so mad and frustrated! I did some of the tutorials at my apple store and now I love I photo and I have used pages for writing a quilt pattern. Hang in there ( :
ReplyDeleteOnce you get used to the change you'll love your Mac. FYI, you don't have to save your pictures to iPhoto. If I'm using them for a blog post I tend to just copy them to my Pictures file, not iPhoto. Also...my advice, don't save all your pics at once in iPhoto...save them in bunches so you can file them as you go. If you have multiple files of the same name/thing you can drag and drop them together to consolidate them into one file. Hope that helps a bit...
ReplyDeleteAw, crap. I use a Mac at work and a pc at home. Naturally, I never use my work computer for blog-reading or posting. *cough* In all seriousness, I don't use the Mac for photo-editing, so I'm really no help. But I will say I'm a big fan of the Mac. It's generally much faster and less susceptible to viruses and whatnot. And as for the intuitive bit...I think it is more intuitive for someone whose brain isn't PC-trained. Like if I bought my 95-year-old grandma a computer, I'd get a Mac because she's never touched a computer before and it would be easier to learn. That's all I have to offer. Resume tantrum.
ReplyDeleteI just upload straight from my mac to blogger with no problem and I don't compress anything. From blogger, click the photo button, click upload from computer, scroll down to photos on the left side, Then it opens iphoto, you can locate your file or last upload. Click the first photo, press down the shift key, then click the last photo. Click ok (or whatever it says at the bottom). And voila!
ReplyDeleteHope that helps!
My move from a PC to a Mac wasn't an easy one but now I love my Mac. It's so fast!
ReplyDeleteWhen you upload a picture from IPhoto to Flickr via "share" on iphoto, you're promoted to select a set. I had a hard time finding where I put my photos too until I realized I needed to select "Photostream".
If you have an Apple store nearby, you're able to use them for support (book your time online through the Genius Bar) or classes even if you didn't buy your computer there.
I don't get the love affair with Macs. They're expensive and a PIA to learn to use. I feel your pain, sister!
ReplyDeleteOnce you get sorted you will never go back. Hang in there, there are YouTube tutorials,I bet or the apple store folks are really helpful.
ReplyDeleteI hope by now you've had plenty of wine and are in state where you dont really give a crap about the computer.
ReplyDeleteI still have no idea how to load photos onto my blog via my Ipad. (which means you're going to get a ton of photoless posts when I go away in Septmeber!)
I was going to offer my invaluable advice as I am on a Mac but others have beaten me to it. I agree though...Macs are better than pc's in terms of intuitiveness and lack of catching viruses.
ReplyDeleteWe changed too, I hated the CHANGE at first, but now I LOVE my IMAC, be patient it will grown on you!!
ReplyDeleteOh, Kristie, I feel for you! We recently switched to a Mac also - you'll get it, hang in there. But, I do suggest that glass of wine (or two) right now and I promise you you'll love the Juki!!
ReplyDeleteLOL...I would go with your instinct and give a good kick!! You will feel better ..until you see the bits and pieces falling off!!
ReplyDeleteI have a Mac in our Kitchen and other than that mostly PCs. I have a computer business and I never suggest switching. I use the Mac for surfing and that is about it.
ReplyDeleteiPhoto is not a good photo program and I have had a client accidentally delete it and could not get to their photos. When I researched it he was not alone. Also the iPhoto photo editing leaves much to be desired. Unless you can take your Mac back I would suggest using Adobe Photoshop Elements it is the regular persons Adobe Photoshop. You can get it for Mac or PC and it is a great photo editing tool. Photoshop Elements has great editing tools and sharing features.
Also make sure you get a good antivirus because it is a myth that Mac does not get virus ( I have seen them) Kaspersky Antivirus is my favorite for both Mac and PC.
I also use a Mac and absolutely love it! Once you get it all figured out I am sure you will too. Like everyone before me has said, there are a lot of tools out there to help you out, you just have to find them.
ReplyDeleteI, like Laura, upload my photos directly from iphoto to blogger without compressing. I find it very easy this way. I hope this helps and that you will be happier with your purchase in the near future. Hang in there!
I also have a Mac and LOVE IT!! Just give it some more time and you'll love it too...change is hard and yes go take a breather ;o)
ReplyDeletePC girl to the core.
ReplyDeleteI don't like learning new things when I don't have to, and I don't like paying their crazy prices for service/upgrades, etc.
So I'm sorry! You've had too many frustrations for a weekend friend!
Kristie! I have a Mac and use iPhoto too. GO TO THE APPLE STORE and spend time in both the free workshops and with a genius. Find out if you can still buy "one-to-one" which is $99 for an entire year and you get to work with their experts up to once a week. You can only get it with a new Mac purchase. Sometimes I still get confused, but only because I use a PC at work and I have to go back and forth. My husband and I were in the Apple store TODAY looking at new MacBooks, so I will remain hooked. Plus it syncs so nicely with my iPad! (yes, I'm an Apple freak!). Email me if you have other questions and i will try to help. :) in the meantime thanks for your timely blog because I was just about to ask some bloggers about their photo to blog process! I will be bugging a few of your commenters! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh man. I hate the feeling when technology just slows you down. I hope your Juki played more nicely. And hopefully the Mac will start cooperating soon too!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain - I hate being frustrated! Alas, I have no advice. My iphone is the extent of my mac-ness.
ReplyDeleteForget the computer! Go play with Juki!!! I didn't know you had gotten a juki; I just got a new-to-me Juki in january. I LOVE IT (love it love it love it!) Don't sew through your hand though - it goes really fast! :)
ReplyDeleteOnce you get used to a Mac, you'll never go back. A couple tips for you. Make sure that your camera doesn't require some software to be installed on your Mac so it can "read" everything okay. Second, leave your camera "off" when you plug it into the USB port. Once plugged in, turn on, iphoto should start up automatically. It will then show you all your photos on your camera. You can select which ones you want to download or download all of them. Make sure the little box is checked to "auto split" the "events." Then it will put everything in by date. You can rearrange things into albums, events, etc. As far as making the file of your picture smaller, I don't believe you can do that in iphoto. I usually open my photos in Photoshop (which is part of the CS5 package) and then resize and resave. You can also crop in Photoshop, adjust contrast, etc. It's great. If you don't want to use iphoto, you can open up the "camera icon" and drag the image file to your desktop. Good luck! Sorry this is so long.
ReplyDeleteYou has a great blog. I'm very interesting to stopping here and leaves you a comment. Good work.
ReplyDeleteLets keep writing and share your information to us.
Nb: Dont forget to leave your comment back for us.
Hey Kristie, I had to switch to mac a couple of years for a graphic contract I was working on. The timing was terrible on my part but necessary. Needless to say I did not enjoy that project or my learning curve but it did thrust me headfirst into my mac and for that I am grateful. I agree with the commenter who said Mac is very intuitive. In the long run it is simpler for the user but if you are coming from a PC where you have to do all the work of organizing (& thinking) it can get very frustrating. Personally I am not a big fan of iPhoto, I like a bit more control as I do a lot of stuff with photoshop for work.
ReplyDeleteHang in there, it will get easier.
PS, I still owe you a follow up email from our earlier (Disney) conversation.
Definitely a learning curve. I wrote a similar post a year ago. I was ready to cry! But now that I am Mac..I can't go back. It's true!
ReplyDeleteI upload to iphoto and then make files in my "finder". Then I click and drag them to store. Then I use my photoshop to edit (and save it in the same file)to upload it to blogger. Not a fan of the editing on iphoto, personally!
I have been a Mac girl most of my life, so I don't know the learning curve. But I promise you that it won't be long before you start to love it. I just love never having problems with my computer. Everyone in my family is always needing or fixing or upgrading or whatever ... and I just turn on my trusty Mac every morning, and do what I need to do.
ReplyDeleteI do have trouble uploading onto blogger though. I am no computer whiz, but I think it has more to do with blogger than anything else because it's the only time I have trouble uploading. What I do is select the photo I want to upload in iPhoto and then when I am uploading in blogger, I just go to the spotlight (search) box and type in the name of the photo (usually something like img_1234). It's not the most intuitive process, but it helps keep me from throwing the laptop across the floor.
Good luck!
oh my goodness...my husband has been trying to get me to convert to Mac and this is not encouraging me to do so. i am sorry that i laughed when i read this but it was pretty funny!
ReplyDeleteE just got a Mac, and I'm using it occasionally for editing pictures and posting. It does take some time, and I hope you can work through the frustrations. I think one bright side is the iPhoto editing software is pretty awesome, especially for costing nothing extra. Deep breaths, sips of wine, and you can do it!
